Amersfoort, 2nd June 2015 – Mars One was featured in a risk management workshop organized by Marsh Netherlands and AIG Europe Limited Netherlands, both being divisions of global leading organizations in the field of risk management and insurance. In this workshop, financial, insurance, and risk experts discussed how the risks of the Mars One mission (including 'Black Swan' risks) could be identified and how they can be managed.
Risk management is the calculation of risks through the analysis of comparable events in the past. However, a human mission to Mars has never been done before; new and creative methods must be applied in order to evaluate the risks associated with the Mars One mission. “The pioneering mission of Mars One is a unique and exciting initiative,” said Focko Dorhout Mees, CEO of Marsh Netherlands. “Their case especially stood out to us because of the unknown risks associated to the mission. We believe that the Mars One mission is a challenging one and it was a very stimulating topic for the attending professionals in the workshop.”
“The insurance industry is not known for thinking outside of the box. This workshop showed that people in the risk and insurance community can even think 'outside the planet' if you bring them together in a different environment,” said Eric de Bruin General, Manager of AIG Europe Limited Netherlands.
Mars One is in the initial phase of planning for a very complex mission that comes with all kinds of risks. “There is no such thing as a risk-free mission to Mars, and it is important that we identify and understand the risks. Once they are known, we can manage and mitigate them. The participants of the workshop were all risk managers from large organizations and experts from Marsh and AIG. I am very pleased with the result of this workshop. With all that experience in one room we gained a great contribution to our risk management efforts.” said Bas Lansdorp, CEO and Co-founder of Mars One.
This one-day workshop was held on May 21st, 2015 in Leiden, The Netherlands.
